Our New Home

renovating our 1970's ranch-style home

Our decision to renovate a 1970s ranch style home came about much like the first time we decided to renovate. We have always had a dream to build our forever home in the country on this one specific hill, overlooking this one specific pond. We had the land picked out and everything. Now, we live in the South where a lot of families still live close together. Will’s family is no different. His parents live right next door to his aunt and uncle and their houses back up to 10 acres. One day in 2021, I was informed that Will’s parents and aunt and uncle ended up purchasing that land. The acreage included a house, but no one thought that we would be interested because it was so dated. Insert my mother-in-law who is a dreamer like me. She can see the potential in old, run-down, smelly houses.  She told me to go up and look at the house when I got a chance—just to see if I thought it might be a fun project. Or to see if we would be interested in buying it. So I went up there—without Will—for the first time. Because you, know, there’s no need in ruffling his feathers over nothing. I walked through and fell in love all over again. I had the same feeling walking through this home as I did when I walked through the old farmhouse 4 years prior. I could see our family living there. I could see our child (and future children) running around. It was so spacious. The owner actually left a tube of the original blueprints and floorplans there—which I thought was super cool.

I went home that night and immediately looked to Pinterest. Somehow, I don’t know if it was luck, or the universe or what, but I found a midcentury home online that had the exact same floorplan as “our” house. Double sided fireplace and everything. I showed the house to Will the next day, along with the home on Pinterest. It took him a little while to see my vision. I had to do some major convincing, which included walking through every square inch of the home to tell him what each space “could” be. He finally agreed to let me call our go-to contractor just to see if my ideas were even attainable. I walked Eric through the house and he said, “Welp, it’s going to be a huge project, but a fun one.”

We purchased the home and land (which has a trail that leads to my in-laws—how fun?!) in the fall of 2021 and they didn’t begin construction until January of 2023. As I write this, it’s February 2024 and we are probably a few months from move-in.

What was a 4-bedroom/3-bathroom home with an unfinished basement and laundry closet is now a 4 bedroom/4.5-bathroom home with a finished basement, 2 offices, laundry room, mudroom, and a workout room. We also have a gorgeous sunroom and covered back porch for entertaining. The main room in the basement will be a playroom for our boys and we can enjoy a huge master suite that is actually a converted garage.

We hope this home serves us for many, many years. I can see us raising our boys here, and possibly more children.  I can see kids running wild for years to come. Enjoy the photos and let me know if you have any questions!
