Garage Turned Master Suite

Paige Espey • July 13, 2024

I never thought an old 2-car garage could look this good...

When we first purchased our 1970s ranch-style home, I knew we would have to get resourceful if we were going to create the master bedroom of our dreams. The original master was very small and on the opposite end of the home, so we started tossing around ideas and different ways to rework the rooms. We ultimately decided to convert the garage into the master suite—and I am so glad we did.

A lot of garage conversions feel like just that—a garage with sheetrock. I love our master because we decided to raise the floor up so that you don’t feel like you are stepping down into a different part of the home. Our master floor is level with the rest of the house, and that makes everything feel more cohesive. The doorway that leads into the master bedroom is in the same location as the old doorway the Eskew family used to use when entering their home through the garage. When giving home tours to my friends and family, they don’t even recognize the space as an old 2-car garage.

We vaulted the ceiling and added a bathroom and three closets at the back of the garage, which used to just be an old tool closet. I will share an entire master bath reveal soon.

We went with black Pella windows that crank open and I’m obsessed. The windows overlook a huge field that is farmed by my husband and father-in-law. I knew I wanted tons of windows in this space because the sunsets are incredible.

The floor is Anderson Tuftex engineered hardwood. The color is Woodland and species is White Oak. Surface texture is Bandsaw. Number is 11047. We used this flooring throughout the main level of our home, with the exception of bathrooms and mudroom/laundry. We used a Luxury Vinyl Plank in our basement in a similar color, which I will share soon!

The light pink paint color is Benjamin Moore Boudoir. It can almost look tan in some lighting, which I like. I didn’t want anything too pink, since this is Will’s room too, after all LOL. I just love how it’s almost like a neutral, without being white. I want to paint our basement pink now, I love it that much.

The wood on the ceiling is maple, stained with Old Masters in the color Cedar. I'll link it here. This is the same wood we used on the walls in the main living area. I really wanted mahogany instead of maple, but the price difference was a no-brainer. Maple was a lot cheaper, so we went with that option.

Here are more "before" photos. As always, Eric McMackin with McMackin Construction sees my vision and helps make it a reality! This is the second home he has renovated for us, and I would not use anyone else!

The pendant light is my favorite part of the whole space. I found this light through an Instagram friend and wonderful interior stylist—Kate Pearce (@katepearcevintage)... It’s from Jayson Home and the quality is insane. It took me a little while to get on board with these lantern pendants—because I didn’t want to spend a ton of money to have paper hanging from my ceiling. But this one is crafted with a lightweight gray linen material—and it’s absolutely stunning to say the least.

The rug is from Schoolhouse, and I scored it at a decent price during their Black Friday sale. It is so plush and comfy. I knew I wanted comfort for our master bedroom!

I think we will eventually change out the outlet covers or paint them. The white hurts my eyes against the pink. I also can’t decide if I want to even add window treatments! The view is so gorgeous, but I know we may want them in the morning hours. We also think we will end up building a shop somewhere in the backyard to house our cars if needed since we eliminated the garage from the home. Everything is always a work in progress!

I am counting down the days ‘til the movers come and move our bed and other furniture into this space. I keep telling Will that I won’t feel like we have ACTUALLY moved until our king bed is moved into our master. I cannot wait to style every inch of this room and bring you all along for the ride!

I hope this helps answer a lot of the questions about flooring, paint color, and wood stain! When in doubt—paint your room pink.

Love y’all!
